My cousin had a 13 yr old Morgan. He passed away on Oct. 31, 2006 now she is looking for a new horse but don't know what to get . she want to barrel race like me but also wants to do saddle seat. and all around horse.
Answers:
I would suggest a quarter horse, they are very loving, easy to train and are well mannered. Both your cousin and the quarter horse can learn to barrel race together. I would not buy a horse that already have barrel racing experience, because it may be too much for a beginner. Once your cousin is advanced and can handle a spirited horse, I would suggest a quarter horse/arabian mix. They are a challenge, and you will always be on your toes.
a good horse would be a tennessee walker or a quarter horse
A beginner rider has no business on a barrel horse! If the rider is experienced (you contradicted yourself.is she a beginner or experienced?) a quarter horse is a great barrel horse, or a quarter/thoroughbred cross.your cousin needs to ride several different types of horses to see what she is comfortable with (some people don't like tall horses).
Go to your local riding school, they may be able to help you. She should probably look for a QH X type, as they're versatile and level headed, if she wants something a bit more "breedy" then I suggest a Thoroughbred, contrary to popular opinion most TB's are extremely versatile and have very willing temperaments and are quite capable of doing western as well as english work, often consecutively, they have a great aptness for learning and are beautiful to look at too!
Good luck!:)
the best all-round versatile horse with super personality plus is an Appaloosa. Hardy too. love 'em.
An arabian not only are they beautiful but they are famous for there stamina and endurance, they have an incredible turn of speed, and make an excellent light, balanced riding horse.
arabians are extremely versitile.
I like Paint horses..not only are they versatile they look great doing it! you say a beginner rider but she wants to barrel race?best advice I can give you is when she goes looking for a horse make sure someone goes with her that knows horses..make sure she rides the horse and can handle it.an older well trained gelding will probably be best for her.good luck and hopes she finds the perfect horse for her !!
