it sounds like a garden variety spider. We have several varieties in my area and they are all equally beautiful and poisonous. Their bite will cause you great pain so don't play with it or try and tame it.
They are great for killing off unwanted bugs and here in Alabama we like to see them in our garden becuse we know that the pests will be fewer. ust give them their space and you will get along fine. LOL
Garden spiders come in all colors and color combinations so look them up and you will probably see one like the won you are seeing at your place.
I don't stay around long enough to describe ANY spider except to scream ..AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. get it!

Bolus or angling spider sounds most like what you described. The silver back is puzzling though.
